{"id":782,"date":"2015-02-20T13:02:13","date_gmt":"2015-02-20T18:02:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.adjustedcostbase.ca\/blog\/?p=782"},"modified":"2015-02-22T12:42:05","modified_gmt":"2015-02-22T17:42:05","slug":"calculating-capital-gains-with-incomplete-records","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.adjustedcostbase.ca\/blog\/calculating-capital-gains-with-incomplete-records\/","title":{"rendered":"Calculating Capital Gains with Incomplete Records"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In order to accurately <a title=\"How to Calculate Adjusted Cost Base (ACB) and Capital Gains\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adjustedcostbase.ca\/blog\/how-to-calculate-adjusted-cost-base-acb-and-capital-gains\/\">calculate adjusted cost base and capital gains<\/a> a complete history of all transactions is required, including not only purchases and sales, but also <a title=\"Calculating Adjusted Cost Base with Reinvested Distributions \/ Dividend Reinvestment Plans (DRIPs)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adjustedcostbase.ca\/blog\/calculating-adjusted-cost-base-with-reinvested-distributions-dividend-reinvestment-plans-drips\/\">reinvested distributions<\/a>, <a title=\"Return of Capital and How it Affects Adjusted Cost Base\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adjustedcostbase.ca\/blog\/return-of-capital-and-how-it-affects-adjusted-cost-base\/\">return of capital<\/a>, <a title=\"Phantom Distributions and Their Effect on Adjusted Cost Base\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adjustedcostbase.ca\/blog\/phantom-distributions-and-their-effect-on-adjusted-cost-base\/\">phantom distributions<\/a>, and <a title=\"The Effect of Stock Splits on Adjusted Cost Base\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adjustedcostbase.ca\/blog\/the-effect-of-stock-splits-on-adjusted-cost-base\/\">splits<\/a>.\u00a0 A common and unfortunately occurrence is when a Canadian investor has owned a security for a long time, has failed to maintain a record of adjusted cost base, and has not kept a record of all transactions.<\/p>\n<p>A common example of this dilemma is when an investor has bought shares decades ago, enrolled in the company&#8217;s dividend reinvestment plan (DRIP), neglected to track ACB (perhaps not realizing that this is necessary), and failed to keep copies of all the transaction records.\u00a0 The consequences of this problem will only surface once the shares are eventually sold and capital gains taxes are due.<\/p>\n<p>In such a case, you might be tempted to fudge the numbers and try to come up with a reasonable estimate for ACB.\u00a0 However, this will become problematic if the Canada Revenue Agency initiates an information request or audit.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re unable to provide the required information, the CRA may reassess your claim, resulting in an adjustment to your taxes owed and possibly interest and penalties.<\/p>\n<p>In cases like this you have the following options:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Use an ACB of zero.<\/strong>\u00a0 Since <a title=\"Can My Adjusted Cost Base be Negative?\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adjustedcostbase.ca\/blog\/can-my-adjusted-cost-base-be-negative\/\">ACB cannot be negative<\/a>, such a claim will not likely be challenged.\u00a0 However, you&#8217;ll end up paying more tax than necessary since your reported capital gains will be higher than their true value.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Donate the shares.<\/strong>\u00a0 When you donate qualifying securities in-kind to a recognized charitable organization, not only will you be able to claim a tax credit on the full market value of the shares, but you&#8217;ll avoid paying taxes on any capital gains.\u00a0 Indeed this can be a very efficient way to make a charitable donation.\u00a0 The benefits of this are two-fold: the tax reduction is higher compared to making an equivalent cash donation and you avoid the hassle of calculating ACB.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Establish a guaranteed minimum for ACB.<\/strong>\u00a0 In some cases if you have some partial information, you can use it to prove a minimum adjusted cost base amount.\u00a0 For example, let&#8217;s say that you have a record of the original stock purchase but no records for any reinvested distributions.\u00a0 In such a case you could set the ACB equal to the value of the original purchase.\u00a0 As long as there were no return of capital distributions, the ACB is guaranteed to be no less than this amount.\u00a0 This will still result in claiming a higher capital gain (or lower capital loss) than the true amount but it&#8217;s still better than using an ACB of zero (option 1).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reconstruct the necessary information using online data sources and a spreadsheet.<\/strong>\u00a0 Yahoo! Finance provides historical information on prices, dividends and splits.\u00a0 The investor relations part of a company&#8217;s web site may also provide such information.\u00a0 For example, if you only know the the original purchase date and were enrolled in a company&#8217;s dividend reinvestment plan, you might be able to calculate the ACB using a spreadsheet in conjunction with the historical price, dividend and split data.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use the specific company&#8217;s online tool.<\/strong>\u00a0 A limited number companies provide online tools for calculating ACB specifically for investors in their own shares.\u00a0 However, a minimum amount of information (usually at least the initial purchase information) is required.\u00a0 It may be worth searching online to see if such a tool exists for your investment.\u00a0 Here are some examples:\n<ol>\n<li><a title=\"Bell Canada Enterprises Adjusted Cost Base Calculator\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bce.ca\/investors\/shareholder-info\/transactions-and-cost-base\" target=\"_blank\">Bell Canada Enterprises<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Enerplus Corp.
